Artist Statement
Synesthesia is a neurological condition that causes sense pairing in the brain. My synesthesia causes me to see every letter and number in a particular color. For example, “2” is red, and “M” is blue. I dye cotton fiber by hand to match my synesthete colors, then weave textiles containing coded words and numbers. Textiles have functioned throughout history to communicate identity, social, political, and religious information. My work interfaces text and textiles in new ways via synesthesia. My work is particularly influenced by Scottish Tartan, western subculture, queer identity politics, and industrialization.
