Artist Statement Someone told me recently that tragedy was about how a character’s one fatal flaw does them in. The objects and images in the Northeast Iowan Book of the Dead represent that flaw: the faith in a particular vision of life, a vision that turned out to be nothing more than crumbling walls of pathetic triumphs and failed dreams, trophy rooms of compromise and dissatisfaction. They reflect a quiet desperation and bittersweet perseverance in the face of a paradigm that grinds you down, bleeds you dry. I want the viewer to breath in this space, or perhaps suffocate.
