Artist Statement
My work is about stories -- the myths, fictions, and fantasies that fuel the imagination.  Fairytale heroes go on quests and explorers venture into the unknown, but most of us watch the action from afar. We encounter the myths indirectly, embedded in mundane forms – magazine articles, postcards, photographs, fugitive and tenuous scraps.  This sort of myth-imbued ephemera is at once exciting – it bears the mark of achievement – and sad, because it is inadequate, and fades.  It is a reminder that our endeavors can lead us to transcendence and deeper understanding, and yet can also be our downfall.  Sometimes we make things too big and go too far: the Titanic, the largest passenger steam ship of its time, sank during its maiden voyage, record-setting Amelia Earhart disappeared during her longest flight, and wildlife expert Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray while filming a documentary titled 'Ocean’s Deadliest.'  Sometimes we try, and fail, unprepared for the crashing iceberg, the wireless communications failures, the indifference of nature.  But we still have to try.
