Artist Statement
My creative practice has led me on a search to find a new female icon. Through painting, an arena is created where artists can invent their own realm of reality, complete with those who they want to inhabit it. What I’ve invented is a hybrid or displaced female that crosses the boundaries of history, gender, and cultural representations of femininity and power. The subject is inspired by a series of Medieval reliquary statues of an unknown female saint. In this body of work her image interjects within current and historical references of the ecstatic body, homosocial space, and the erotic impulse. By combining all of these components, my desire is to create an Icon that reflects the multiple notions of identity and the many layers that create female sexuality. By exploring the limitations and possibilities that only the realm of painting can create, allows for this body of work to operate as a support for all the possibilities of pleasure and freedom that an invented icon can posses.
