Artist Statement
I perform certain spiritual operations, like, for instance, singing a song to the MFA class called “We Are All Artists” while friends passed the collection plates. Sometimes spiritual operations just happen to me without my planning. I document some of them in small paintings called ex-votos, or in stereo viewers. I like to use balloons because they represent the connection of dualities: the spiritual and the bodily, up and down, magic and science, weight and weightless, and of course, happy and sad. Does the helium needs the balloon as much as the balloon needs the helium?
