Artist Statement
I have recently begun my own research on paño arte (handkerchief art believed to have emerged from Chicano prisoners in the 1940s) and the huipil (a Mayan textile  made and worn by indigenous  women in Southern and Central America).  Both these art forms are used to tell stories and depict memories and personal experiences.  Using watercolor and pen on "feminine” items such as handkerchiefs, pillowcases, and bed sheets, my recent work examines the social/political  issues and psychological struggles of living on the South Texas border.
