Artist Statement
My work is a result of my own reflections on war. I started to reconsider my thoughts of this issue after viewing photographs taken by a friend who served as a US Army medic in both Iraq and Afghanistan. As an abstract condition in contemporary life, war lends itself to be viewed in multiple ways, because everyone looks at this issue differently. I utilize patterns created from actual photos of soldiers to make an abstract image of war and its casualties, both soldiers and civilians. My methods include looking at historical art works that also address issues of war. I reference Goya, specifically his etching series of “The Disasters of War.” Using a reference from history and putting it in a contemporary context makes the point that war transcends time and space. I believe that wars, past and present, have a strange rippling effect that continues to be felt for decades, and sometimes centuries, to follow. My goal is to create a moment during which my work generates questions and prompts self-reflection regarding issues of war.
