Artist Statement I work to develop familiar relationships with the space I occupy, the materials I utilize, and the tools I use to create my installations. I act on the principle that the best way to attain intimate material knowledge is through first hand experiences; running the string through my fingers, understanding the sensation of the string tension in my hand, knowing the angle the body of the tool has to rest to control the amount of chalk spilled, and so on. There is no way to work with any given material without physical engagement, without practicing and repeating until one knows as much as they can about their materials and tools. In this, the particular investigation I have undertaken with blue chalk and the snapline tool focuses on the translation of craft ideologies into a fine art practice. My ultimate aim is to objectively and systematically discover and highlight the vast potential these simple materials and processes have to offer to better inform the subjective experiences of them.
