Artist Statement
My painting and collage are colorful narratives that explore childhood and fantasy. The soft colors and curious faces of children create a window into a world of ominous situations and peculiar settings. I collect imagery from photographs and magazines and create narratives that reflect the act of play, innocence and danger. I associate the soft colors and innocence to children’s books. The strong feminine energy that influenced my childhood resurfaces in my work and become part of the characters or settings. My collages are the snapshots that imply memory while the paint steps in as the element of fantasy. Fantasy is the escape of what we yearned for in our childhoods but could never physically grasp. The frustrations and desires come through the characters of the mischievous and curious little girls. I am exposing my desires and experience through this fantasy.
Control is an important element in my work; self control and lack of control between the protagonist and antagonist. The characters within the narrative exist in scenes that are strange, revealing tension and vulnerability. The moments are half way points where action is about to take place.
