Artist Statement
I mainly use discarded objects and materials because they show change and development overtime. They decrease in value as they are now scrap, outdated, or overused. Using the innate history, form, and function of the object or material as a point of departure, I reformulate its identity, reintroducing it into the world with either no practical or logical function. Sometimes the objects I find are literally used, while other times they inspire material investigations. I am interested in the transformation of materials, the processes that evoke the essential characteristics of the initial material, but are almost unrecognizable in its final form. I create sculptures from refuse to invite relational exchange. By altering an object from its pre-existing state, I am able to call attention to something that is overlooked. The conversion of matter into something else produces the potential for innovation and new perceptions.
