Artist Statement The twisted understanding of history that I grew up with was built upon cinema. My childhood idea of Westward Expansion was based on films such as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Oklahoma. In these cowboy musical romps, cherry lemonade-pink backdrops set the stage for hoedowns, romance and frontiering, glossing over the terrible violent history of the American West. In my paintings and drawings I begin with images from those films exploring their color-saturated Utopias with my own hand, embracing their dysfunction. katiedorame.com
