Artist Statement
Like most immigrants that negotiate the American cultural landscape, I view society through a dual lens of an insider and outsider.  This hybrid position has at times generated mistranslations of cultural codes and meaning.  The potential incongruity between image and text is an area of departure I have used to investigate the performative aspect of signs. I have approached my art practice as a tool to better comprehend the environment I occupy and the values that shape it.  As I investigate established cultural values, I materialize my interpretation of significance through consumer goods and pop culture imagery.  I am interested in the socio-political and economic systems represented by material products and the visual language that associates these objects with value.  I explore both sensational imagery and ordinary common objects to focus on possible misinterpretations to develop an inventory of visual language that I can reference to better understand my relationship to the culture I navigate within.
