Artist Statement History is a map of the past written in the present, and tells as much about our current condition as it does about former times. I address my concerns with history by using found images and text to create everything from collages and printed textiles to videos and performances. Through appropriation I explore the boundary between the archived, public narrative and one that is wholly imagined. Every text has a subtext, and my work relies equally on both the surface of the image and its underlying cultural and emotive connections. In the end, I'm not interested in empirical truth, or in following a factual account. I take what I find and reshape it into an alternate narrative, one that relies on recognition of the original form but establishes an unorthodox version. Adaptation and transformation of the source material creates another kind of history, one that is inflected by the personal and supplies an account beyond the existing record.
